er the years, we have found that the Hardware we buy normally works as
advertised. However, we have found, frequently, that Software is released by the
manufacturer, without thorough testing, and the end user purchases problematic
software
Before you purchase Software, we suggest that you read reviews in computer magazines and
on the Internet!
Below, we have information on free software for Microsoft Windows and Linux
that might be helpful to you:
 |
AVG Anti-Virus
Free Edition is a free anti-virus program for the Microsoft
Windows OS. The updates are usually small files to download and they
are also free, for the life of the version of the program. Version 7.5 is
now available for Download.

CentOS is a Linux
distribution for the Enterprise. This is a free clone of a very well known
U.S. distribution (Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the upstream distribution) that is not free. It is very stable and very secure. It
can be used on Servers in the Enterprise or on Desktops. It is supported,
for Security and Stability updates, for years. CentOS has an extremely
active Mailing List and the Developers and Users are very helpful. This is
the distribution we use on the Desktops in our house.

 | IPCop is a Linux distribution for Firewall. It is very popular and extremely well documented.
Backups and Updates are very easy to do. We are using IPCop
on our oldest PC, to protect our computers (Firewall) and to provide Routing
services, so our computers can all use the Internet at the same time. IPCop includes an
Intrusion Detection System called Snort. It provides a second
layer of defense right after the firewall. The PC running IPCop is
running "Headless". The monitor, keyboard and mouse have been
disconnected.

 | KNOPPIX is a
bootable Live system on a CD, consisting of a representative collection of
GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many
graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals.
KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop,
educational CD, rescue system, or to test a PC you are considering
purchasing, to see if Linux will run on that hardware. It is not necessary
to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD
can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.

Mozilla If
you are using a Microsoft OS, we strongly recommend that you discontinue
using the Internet Explorer web browser and the Outlook Express e-mail
client, for security reasons. Consider using the Firefox web browser and the
Thunderbird e-mail client, from Mozilla, instead. There are security issues
with Firefox, as with Internet Explorer, but they are much more likely to be
fixed, quickly, in Firefox.

 | OpenCD contains a
compilation of high quality Open Source software, for Microsoft Windows
boxes. You can legally install these programs on multiple boxes and you can
copy the CD and give it to your friends. It also contains a mini Live Disk
of Ubuntu Linux, for Windows users who would like to see what Linux is
like, without installing Linux on their computer. If you boot from the CD,
it will boot into Ubuntu Linux and it will not alter anything on your computer. It is a
Live Disk, a demonstration that works.
